The art of Burlesque dates back to Victorian London in the 1830s, where it was originally a form of performance used to parody popular culture such as Shakespeare or opera. Shows were performed by an all-female cast mimicking the role of the patriarch in society. These attractive, under-dressed women pushed new boundaries, often causing prudish outrage, which of course further fuelled the demand for burlesque shows.

Throughout the 20th century burlesque gradually transformed into the erotic striptease that we know it as today. The burlesque outfits became more elaborate, with corsets, ruffles and feathers becoming commonplace. The 1940s saw a period of censorship, during which time the burlesque industry experienced somewhat of a decline. It’s popularity came and went across the next few decades, until the 1990s when burlesque dancing saw a resurgence in popularity thanks to stars such as Dita Von Teese.
